Why does it cost more if it has been over a year since your piano was last tuned?
Pianos that are not serviced regularly take me significantly longer to tune. Often I will have to perform a pitch raise which adds another 30-45 minutes to the time.
What is a pitch raise?
If it has been over 1 year since your piano was last tuned, it very likely will need a pitch raise. A pitch raise is needed when a piano has decreased in pitch (10 cents or more). This happens whether the piano is played or not. A pitch raise is basically a rough tuning to bring the piano back to pitch so that a fine tuning can be done. Once your piano has been tuned, yearly or semi-yearly tunings will avoid the need of a pitch raise.

How often should I have my piano tuned?
For pianos that are played regularly and for best enjoyment, I highly recommend having it tuned every 6 months. Our climate in Texas is the greatest contributor for pianos losing their tuning. Pianos tend to drift out of tune when our Texas weather changes in the spring and fall. Also, pianos that are not tuned regularly (several years or more) are much more likely to break strings during a tuning.
